Andrew James Byler

Mar 26, 1990 — Jul 29, 2026

Andrew James Byler, 36, of St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away at his home.

Andrew was a naturalist, endlessly curious, deeply dedicated, and in love with the natural world. At the time of his passing, he was pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology at Missouri Western State University, and he was posthumously awarded his degree. He spent his college years conducting research with MoWest's biology department, and he was never more at home than out in the field. He will be remembered waist-deep in a pond or river, covered in mud, gently cradling a turtle or snake he'd just pulled from the water.

Andrew overcame a difficult childhood and built his own path in life through sheer determination and a strong work ethic. He was, in every sense, a self-made man. Those who knew Andrew described him as respectful, quiet, and highly reliable.

Andrew is survived by his mother, Claudia Byler, of Kansas City; his brother, Kenneth Leigh Byler (TJ), of Tampa; and his sister, Amanda Ann Gregory (JD), of Chicago. He was preceded in death by his father, Patrick Leigh Byler, and by the many beloved animals who shared his life.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Missouri Western State University's Biology Research Department in Andrew's memory.
